Advice from SAE Institute Nashville Career Services Advisor Kevin White

Meet SAE Institute Career Services Advisor Kevin White as he shares his experience, how the music industry has evolved, and tips for working in the entertainment industry.

What are some great areas to work after graduating SAE Institute?

Podcasting and social media are hot right now. Even with the quarantine, these are areas that I see flourishing.

What are some of the pros of sound engineering and how it can benefit your music career?

Sound engineering is an integral part of any music career, whether in live sound or in the studio. But don’t forget that an audio engineer can apply their skills way beyond just music, from corporate audio-visual work to forensic audio restoration. Some of the best paying entry level jobs that I regularly recruit for are in audio visual installation.

What are some tips students should know about in terms of how they should brand themselves for success in the future?

Find your niche. I know that is easier said than done, but I see it all the time. If you can combine your past skills and experience with your newly developed audio skills, then you have something unique to offer. I could give tons of examples. It could be something as simple as combining your previous experience driving a forklift or truck (seemingly unrelated skills) with live sound. Keep in mind that these skills are an added value for a live sound company. Or maybe it’s combining your audio skills with a background in sales and bam! Now you’re marketable to a pro audio company or retailer. In my personal journey, that meant combining my passion for spaceflight and history with my musicology and restoration skills in order to contribute to the NASA Apollo Flight Journal.

What is some advice you would give someone interested in working in the Entertainment industry?

Follow your passion. If you want to live a life that includes waking up looking forward to your day, you just have to go for it. Be responsible about your approach. Connect the dots between your dream career and your current situation with realistic incremental goals. Follow that with determination and guidance from people that have been there before you, and you have a recipe for success.
