Alum Spotlight: Meet Audio Engineer, Producer, and Studio Owner, Victor Ureta

Victor Ureta

From audio engineering and music production to working alongside talented artists, SAE Institute of Technology Miami alum Victor Ureta, professionally known as Jinn Ghost, has built his career around his passion for music and the creative process. As an audio engineer, producer, and studio owner at Abstract Recording Studios, Victor works behind the scenes to help bring music to life. In this alum spotlight, he shares the artists who have inspired him, memorable career experiences, his time at the Miami campus, and his advice for aspiring music professionals.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

There isn’t a specific thing that inspired me to make music, but if I had to choose a person, for sure, 100%, it would have to be Michael Jackson, mainly because of the production style when it came to mixing and mastering. All those small things, for me, also as a perfectionist, impacted me a lot for sure. He was a huge inspiration for me and for everything that I do.

What are some of the most memorable projects you’ve worked on?

There are so many projects that I have been blessed to be a part of. Some of the most memorable ones would have to be with the artist Nata and the artist Louis Amar for their crazy artistry and crazy production. It really showed me inside when it comes to the artistry of things. I’m behind the scenes doing all the mixing, the mastering, and being in the control room, but I’m not the artist. They really give me a second insight as to, okay, how this really works.

What are some career moments you’re especially proud of?

Moments of my career that I’m proud of for sure would be working with a bunch of high-end and just talented artists. I was able to assist a session with Don Corleon, a crazy dancehall producer. He did a song with Ed Sheeran called “Brace It” and the artist Ishawna. So being able to be inside that session and see different things, especially how an A-list celebrity works, it for sure has been a great moment to experience.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Realistically, in the next five years, I hope to be in a position where Abstract is a household name, we have multiple studios all over the place, and I’m really able to work on more of my music, as well as continuing to work with talented artists and people who want to and just love to make music.

How would you describe your experience at SAE Institute of Technology Miami?

My experience at SAE was a very interesting experience for sure. Coming into the institute, SAE really had a bunch of different characters, a bunch of different people from different backgrounds doing different things. Being able to collaborate with them, see their perspective on how they view music, and work with so many different talented people, that’s truly what SAE is about. It’s collaborating and making something that is timeless.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in the music industry?

The best advice that I could give somebody starting out, or that wants to follow this path in music, would be 100% never give up and practice as much as possible. Build relationships and always polish your craft. Again, talent without practice is like faith without works. That’s the best advice I can give anybody that’s new.
